Ayelet Shaked, the youngest ever cabinet minister in Israel’s history, is one of the most influential and most controversial figures in Israeli politics. She is articulate, charismatic, very good-looking, self-confident, less tortuous and more direct than most politicians. She is also seen by parts of the Israeli public and the international community as being on the extreme right wing of a right-wing Israeli government.
Nicola Abe, chief of the Der Spiegel bureau in Israel, and I held a wide-ranging interview with Shaked, which appears in the current issue of the weekly. In it, she relates to a number of issues, and in particular sharply attacks the European governments which fund left-wing NGOs in Israel.
